Nakhoda Mosque
Nakhoda Mosque is the largest mosque in Kolkata. It was originally a small place of worship for Moslems. The present structure was commissioned by Abdur Rahim Osman and built in the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. The foundation stone of this mosque was laid on September 11, 1926. The total cost incurred for the construction was Rs. 15 lakhs. It is situated north of BBD Bagh. This huge mosque can accommodate 10,000 people.
The mosque has a height of over 15 m and is four-storeyed. It is modelled on Akbar’s tomb, which is at Sikandra near Agra. The red sandstone mosque has two 46 m minarets and a brightly painted onion-shaped dome.
Outside Nakhoda mosque, every day except Sunday, you can buy ‘attar’ which is a perfume made from essential oils and flower fragrances. There are large congregations during Islamic festivals, especially on Id and Muharram. The mosque is governed by a board of trustees.
