My dear Arun,
Such a terrible thing happened yesterday! The whole picture is still before my eyes. I must tell you all about it. On my way to my uncle’s house in Kolkata, I saw a shocking sight.
With a friend of mine, I stood upon the pavement near the junction of College Street and Mahatma Gandhi Road. A double-decker was coming up at top speed. It was making its way towards Sealdah. Just at that moment a little boy of nine or ten was crossing the street. Unfortunately, a pen dropped from his school bag and he stopped to pick it up. The passers-by raised shouts of alarm at once. The driver made a desperate attempt to stop the bus but failed. So, it went over the body of the little boy. In my great horror, I shut my eyes and opened them only to see the limp and lifeless body of the boy lying on the road. The state of my mind can better be imagined than described. I felt how uncertain life is.
I was greatly moved at this tragic end of a promising boy.
