A New Classmate
Jackie watched as the rest of her classmates raced to the field. No one waited for her. No one asked her to join them. She walked sadly to the canteen by herself.
Jackie sat alone in the canteen and ate a bowl of noodles. She was new and she could not speak English well. None of her classmates liked her. They laughed at her when she said the wrong things. Jackie finished her bowl of noodles and was about to read a book when she noticed one of her classmates, Brenda, sitting miserably at the other end of the canteen. Jackie went over to ask Brenda what the matter was.
Jackie found out that Brenda was not feeling well. She gave Brenda a cup of water. Then, she put her arm around her and took her to the staff room to look for their teacher. Their teacher praised Jackie for helping. Brenda was grateful to Jackie for her help.
When the rest of the classmates found out what Jackie had done, they felt ashamed of the way they had treated her. They decided to teach Jackie to speak English properly. They also let her join them in their games.
