Helping a Classmate
It was time for recess. Tom ran to the canteen with his classmates. They queued up at the confectionery stall to buy biscuits and sandwiches. Then, they went to the drink stall to buy a few packets of drinks. They were starving and they could not wait to tuck in.
Tom and his classmates were about to start eating when they noticed one of their classmates, Jonathan, drinking a cup of water. He looked hungry and miserable but he did not have any food.
“Are you all right?” asked Tom. “Why didn’t you buy any food?”
Jonathan burst into tears and told them that his father had lost his job. He did not give Jonathan any pocket money. Jonathan could only eat a slice of plain bread for breakfast. Tom and his classmates took pity on Jonathan. They offered him their biscuits and sandwiches. They also bought him a packet of drinks. Jonathan was very grateful to them. He gobbled down the food hungrily.
After recess, Tom told his teacher about the problems that Jonathan was facing. The teacher agreed to start a fund. Each of the boys would contribute ten cents a day so that Jonathan would be able to have a proper meal at recess.
