Students and Television
Television is an important source of news, views, and many other forms of information, instruction and entertainment. Live telecasts have importance and charm of their own. So a TV set has become an important household item. Whereas there are certain TV programmes for all categories of viewers, there are others specially meant for children, youth and students.
There are certain important considerations regarding the habits of students so far as TV viewing is concerned. First, the type of programmes that they should view. Second, for how much time they should view them.
The programmes that students should view are those which help them in their studies, entertain them in a healthy way, and teach them how to lead a good life. They should avoid programmes that concern violence.
An important thing that students should remember is that television carries a lot of commercial advertisements. What do these commercial advertisements do? They sometimes create artificial demands. So, students should not press their parents to buy them all types of things which are advertised.
Students should not spend too much time viewing TV. There are students who view TV for hours together and some others do so late into the night. This is bad for their eyes as well as for their general health. Many diseases of today are due to our sedentary habits. Excessive TV viewing badly affects the students’ studies. Moreover, they get very little time for reading books of general interest and for participating in games and sports.
So, students should decide very carefully how much time they can easily spare for television. Moreover, they should view only those programmes which are interesting and useful.
