The Farmer and His Sons
Once upon a time, there was an old farmer who owned several acres of land. He had no problem with money but was worried about his idle sons. Many a time had he advised them to work hard but all in vain.
Once the farmer fell seriously ill. He felt his end was near. So calling his sons to his bedside, he said, “I have a secret to share with you. There’s a rich treasure hidden in our fields. Dig it up after my death”.
The farmer died a week after this. Mourning over, the sons started digging up the fields. But great was their disappointment when they found no trace of the treasure. They felt cheated, in a way.
Just at that time, a family friend advised the young men not to lose heart. He suggested that they should sow seeds in the dug-up fields. The sons carried out the suggestion.
Time passed. The crop was ready. When they cut it, it fetched a lot of money. Now they realised the true meaning of the hidden treasure. It lay in the rich crop. The young men learned the value of hard work. This is what their father had wanted.
Moral: No pains, no gains.
