Sir,
The recent report on female foeticides and related figures are shocking for all conscientious citizens. No doubt the medical professionals involved in the heinous crime should be dealt out exemplary punishment.
But the larger issue is the outdated mindset of the people who even in the 21st century consider female children a curse, fit to be disposed of as dead fetuses. This mindset is sustained by social evils like dowry. To orthodox parents, the girl child appears a burden that will take a heavy toll on the finances of the family. These social evils are so deep-rooted that even education is failing to eradicate them. Male chauvinism refuses to accept the fact that females are
as good as they are All the factors a compounding the situation. The ages-old prejudices remain and even grow stranger. Then, there is the fact that the biggest enemy of a woman is another woman in the guise of mistress, mother-in-law. The joint family system does not allow any room for the correction of imbalances. Thus, the problem can not be solved by punishing the medics guilty of foeticide. The real criminal is the society that clings to evil practices, outdated customs, and irrational prejudices.
The need of the hour is a massive effort to arouse public consciousness and to usher in new waves of social reforms.
Yours faithfully
