Sir,
I would like to express my views regarding standard of performance in sports in our country through the columns of your esteemed paper.
The poor performance of our athletes and players in Asian Games and Olympic makes every citizen in India hang his head in shame. It is high time that we analyse our shortcomings and find ways to improve the standard of performance at the international level. Apart from PT Usha and Leander Peas, no Indian athlete has emerged who can ably challenge international athletes.
But finding loopholes in the sports organisation, cursing our fate and criticizing our sportsmen or lamenting over our poor performance will do no good but it will only demoralise our players and athletes. The examples of countries like China and Japan are before us, who select boys and girls and groom them for the international sports from the very early age.
Thus, a nationwide talent search should be conducted to find out talented boys and girls. And these young boys and girls should be put under the charge of well seasoned coaches. Most importantly, favouritism, nepotism or the dirty game of politics must not be allowed in the selection of these young boys and girls. Such steps will go a long way in raising the standard of our sports.
